- BALI CULTURE -

Bali has one of the highest temple densities in the world. Statues are often covered
with a black & white checkered cloth which is a symbol for good luck.

The Pura Taman Ayun temple, built in Mengwi in 1635, is the second largest temple.

The front gate.

Large gold doors still grace the Pura Ulun Danu Batur temple.

The Pura Penataran Sasih temple in Pejeng (near Ubud) is home to the largest kettle gong
in the world. Supposedly one night the moon fell from the sky and got stuck in a tree. A thief
climbed the tree and let the water out of the moon. Due to this atrocity, the moon shattered
and turned into this kettle gong.

Ceremonial cremations were held outside so that everyone could pay their last respects.
