Black Bears are the smallest American bears and are the most common bear of the Rocky Mountains. Even though they are often black, colors range through brown to white. They swim and climb trees well, and can run 30 miles per hour in short bursts. They are omnivores and have an excellent sense of smell.
Black bears, although often thought of as hibernators, do not truly enter a state of torpor. While their body temperature lowers along with respiration and heartbeat, they do not decrease significantly, and the animals remain somewhat alert and active.

In order to keep both hikers and bears safe from each other, the city will section off areas where there have been frequent bear sightings.
