CANADA GEESE

The Canada Goose, also referred to as the Canadian Goose, is a large bird (generally weighing 7 - 14 pounds). The females looks virtually identical to the males but are slightly smaller and have a different honk.

These birds feed mainly on plant material, eating grasses and sedges in fields or dunking their heads under water to reach aquatic plants.

A pair of Canada Geese will remain together for life. If one is killed, the other may find a new mate.

The loud familiar honking call

Here, the female sits on the nest while the protective male remains nearby. During this time, the adults molt (regrow their flight feathers) and can't fly for a month.

The baby goslings are able to swim immediately and fly at nine weeks old.

Traditionally these birds used to migrate south for the winter, but have adapted well to human urbanization so often remain in the same area year-round.

The lakes in the lower elevations of Colorado seldom freeze completely solid.
