TREE SQUIRRELS

Fox squirrels are the largest of the tree squirrels. There are several different color types, but in Colorado they have gray backs with yellowish bellies. They are not territorial and are most commonly found in oak and mixed forests.


Fox Squirrels depend primarily on tree seeds, but will also eat buds, fruits, cultivated grain, insects, eggs and small lizards.


Fox Squirrels and spend more time on the ground than most other tree squirrels.


The curious little Pine Squirrel (or Chickaree) is one of the smallest tree squirrels in the area. They are distinguished by a black line along their sides.


Pine squirrels are territorial.
