WATER BIRDS

These birds tend to seldom stray from water.

The Mallard is probably the most recognized duck in all of North America.


A duck (female) and a drake (male). Mallards form pairs only until the female lays eggs, at which time the male leaves.


Mallards are considered a dabbling duck, because they feed mainly by grazing or upending on the water's surface, and only rarely by diving.

A Great Blue Heron stands motionless in shallow water, waiting to spear anything that swims by.


The Black-Crowned Night Heron is is found across North America and inhabits a variety of wetland habitats .



The Belted Kingfisher is common waterside resident throughout North America, often seen hovering before it plunges headfirst into water to catch a fish. Only the female has the red chest band.
