FLORISSANT FOSSIL BEDS
NATIONAL MONUMENT

The Big Stump is the largest petrified redwood stump in the area. It is about 34 million years old.

This area used to be so filled with petrified stumps that the early settlers actually avoided it because they couldn't get their covered wagons through. Unfortunately until the area was protected in 1969, tourists would remove large pieces as souvenirs so that now very little is left.

The old homestead of Adeline Hornbek still remains from 1878.
